The Top Five Winter Food for Birds
Providing winter food for birds is important as it will all help keep them going through the hard winter. These are our top five recommendations of winter food for birds:
Fat
Fatballs and bird cakes can be great winter foods. You can make your own by melting suet, poured into moulds and allowed to set. Fatty treats attract most birds.
Mealworms
Available from pet ad aquarium shops to feed reptiles, fish and birds. Mealworms are the larvae of a beetle and are available live or dried. High in protein, they are particularly relished by robins.
Seed
Sunflower seed or commercial mixed seed can be offered to bird’s all year round in feeder or on bird tables. Most garden birds will eat seeds, especially Finches.
Peanuts
These have high fat content, which makes them ideal winter bird food. Whole peanuts are safe to put out now as young birds aren’t out. Enjoyed by greenfinches and spotted woodpeckers.
Grated cheese
Go high fat winter food. Mild cheeses are enjoyed by robins and particularly Wrens
