While there is yet to be a final announcement, the current public health situation means that it may prove harder than ever to have a seaside holiday this year. However, by transforming your garden, you may be able to bring a small piece of the beach to your home, instead.
How to bring the beach to your garden this summer.
Use different textures – seashells, pebbles and sand
Pebbles, seashells and sand will immediately remind you of the seaside. Seashells can be bought from a number of online suppliers, should you wish to include them. Unlike gravel and shingle, seashells are not mined so can be a more environmentally friendly product to use in borders, as decoration or to create a pathway. Larger pebbles or sand will also help create a seaside feel.
Planting options
Tamarisk is a hardy plant that looks a little bit like seaweed throughout the warmer months. Fennel is commonly found in sand dunes and can create a seaside feel as well. Wildflowers (including poppies) and grasses are also commonly found near the sea and can add to the beach aesthetic you are aiming to create.
Driftwood
Commonly found on beaches, larger pieces of wood can be used to create sculptures. Several different types are available online – ranging from very ‘natural looking’ through to more traditional sculpture, just using driftwood as a material. If you would prefer a slightly more modern look, rusted or twisted metal can create a similar effect.
Have a beach day!
As well as being a location, being on the beach also creates a certain state of mind. When we the sun is shining, why not take any beach furniture you have (wind breaks, deck chairs, towels etc.) outside, take a good book and enjoy a day relaxing with an ice-cream! By bringing the beach to your garden, it will feel completely different.
