Blue Iris Landscapes
Landscaping and Garden Design

Thoughtfully designed, carefully built, and made to perform.

Longevity is built into the decisions made from the start.

Our designer shapes each garden around how it will be used — from day-to-day movement to time spent with friends and family. That thinking carries through into the layout, levels, materials, and structure, particularly in higher-use areas.

This is where design decisions make the difference, shaping how the space holds up and functions over time.

The result is a space that not only looks right when it’s finished but continues to perform as it should.

Depending on the space and the level of detail involved, this can be developed through a full design process or, in some cases, move more directly into landscaping.

The Foundations of Our Team

Each project is developed through detailed planning and practical experience in how outdoor spaces are built and maintained.

“The difference in how a garden holds up over time usually comes down to the early decisions — layout, levels, and materials. They’re the parts people don’t always notice at first, but they’re what make the space feel right to use.”

Your Project, Step by Step

Initial Contact

A first conversation to understand your garden, your ideas, and any information you already have.

Site Visit & Consultation

We assess the garden in detail — measuring the space, noting planting, levels, ground conditions and any constraints or existing features.

Design Development

Your garden is translated into a detailed CAD design, setting out how the area will be structured including layout, levels, and key materials.*

Design Presentation

We review the design with you, typically in person, to ensure everything feels right before moving forward.

Refinement

Adjustments are made where needed, refining the layout and details until the scheme is fully resolved.

Your Design

The completed design is yours to keep. Many clients choose to continue with us for the build, as the design and implementation are closely aligned.

Implementation

The build is delivered with the same level of care as the design, ensuring everything comes together as intended.

After Completion

Once finished, the space is ready to be used and enjoyed. Ongoing support is available if anything needs attention.

* Timescales can vary slightly at this stage, as the design is developed carefully, with clear communication throughout.

We also carry out landscaping work independently of a full design — whether that’s for more straightforward projects, or where a design or landscaping scheme is already in place.

Guidance Before the Consultation

Before we discuss your garden in detail, it can be useful to have a sense of what you’re naturally drawn to and how you expect to use the space day to day.

For some, the right approach is subtle, a well-balanced layout, clean materials, and planting that feels natural to the setting. For others, there’s an influence or preference in style shaping the direction.

It’s helpful to think about features, materials, and overall feel that stand out to you – the elements you notice and return to.

We tend to think about these in two ways: the structure of the space, and the planting that brings it to life.

Hard Landscaping

The structure of your space

These elements shape how the garden is used, particularly in higher-use areas where durability and structure matter most.

A few things to consider:

Soft Landscaping

The planting and finish

This is where the space becomes more personal, how it feels, changes, and settles through day-to-day use.

Design Directions

Some spaces take on a clearer character, shaped by how they’re used and the feel you’re naturally drawn to.

Others remain more subtle, guided by balance, proportion, and how everything sits together.

Where it’s helpful, we can explore different directions like these:

Core Styles

Contemporary and Structured
Clean lines, considered materials, and a calm, organised layout that holds its form well in higher-use areas.

Natural and Informal
Softer planting, relaxed edges, and a more organic flow that responds naturally to the surrounding conditions.

Cottage-Style Gardens

Layered planting, seasonal colour, and a sense of softness and detail that builds over time.

Minimal or Architectural
Simplified layouts where proportion, spacing, and material choice carry the space.

Blue Iris Landscapes Japanese Style Garden

Influenced Spaces

Some gardens take inspiration from more defined design traditions:

Japanese-Inspired Gardens
Balance, texture, and restraint, with careful placement and a focus on calm, deliberate composition.

Mediterranean Influences
Warm tones, textured materials, and planting suited to drier, sun-exposed areas.

Formal European Gardens
Symmetry, structure, and controlled planting creating a more ordered feel.

Every garden comes with its own layout, features, and natural characteristics.

These are considered throughout the design process, helping shape a space that feels cohesive, balanced, and built to perform.

You don’t need to have every detail resolved before we speak. That’s something we can work through with you, step by step.

Beyond the Typical Garden

While many projects are residential, the same thinking applies to a wide range of outdoor spaces.

Schools and Learning Environments — from structured play areas to informal green spaces

Care Settings — gardens designed to feel calm, accessible, and easy to navigate

Courtyards and Shared Spaces — where layout and durability are key

Wider Outdoor Environments — shaped around how they’ll be used day to day

Each is approached in the same way, understanding how the space will function, and designing around that.

Landscaping and Garden Design FAQs

A garden design isn’t always essential, but it helps ensure the space is properly planned before any landscaping work begins.

It allows the layout, levels, materials, and key features to be resolved in advance, reducing the likelihood of changes during the build. For most garden landscaping projects, having a clear design, leads to a more consistent result and a space that performs better over time.

The cost of garden design and landscaping depends on the size of the space, the complexity of the layout, and the materials used.

A smaller garden with simple features will differ significantly from a fully designed and built landscape with structural elements and planting schemes. We provide clear guidance early in the process, helping you understand realistic costs based on your space and priorities.

Yes — garden design and landscaping are usually treated as separate stages.

Design work focuses on planning the space in detail, while landscaping covers the build itself. Keeping these as separate steps allows you to move forward with clarity at each stage, without committing to the full project upfront.

Yes — we provide clear, separate quotes for each stage of the process.

This allows you to understand what’s involved at each point, whether that’s the design phase or the landscaping work itself. It also ensures there are no unexpected costs, as everything is outlined before any work begins.

Timescales vary depending on the scope of the project and the level of detail involved in both the design and build stages.

Garden design typically takes a few weeks, allowing time for careful planning, development, and refinement. Landscaping work can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on complexity. A clear timeline is provided so you know what to expect at each stage.

Longevity is built into the early stages of the design process, rather than added later.

By carefully considering layout, levels, materials, and how the garden will be used, we create outdoor spaces that hold up well and continue to perform as expected. This reduces the need for ongoing adjustments and helps maintain consistency across the space.

Yes — the completed garden design is yours to keep and can be used with another contractor if you choose.

Many clients prefer to continue with us for the landscaping work, as the design and build stages are closely aligned. However, the plans are fully independent and can be implemented in a way that suits your project.

A garden design service typically includes a detailed layout plan, along with drawings that define measurements, materials, and key features within the space.

It brings together both the visual and practical elements of the garden, ensuring that everything works before landscaping begins. This helps avoid uncertainty during the build and creates a clearer direction for the project.

You’ll be involved at each key stage of the garden design process, particularly during the initial brief and design review.

Your input helps shape the overall direction, while we guide the technical and practical aspects. The aim is to create a space that reflects how you want to use your garden, while ensuring it works effectively over time.

Before starting a landscaping project, it’s helpful to think about how you want to use the space day to day, as well as the level of maintenance, you’re comfortable with.

Factors such as layout, drainage, ground conditions, and access can all influence how the garden is designed and built. These are considered early in the process to ensure the space works both visually and practically.

Yes — we offer both garden design and landscaping as part of a complete service.

This ensures that the original design intent is carried through into the finished space, with consistency between planning and build. We can also provide a design-only service if you’d prefer to explore options before committing to landscaping work.

Yes — many clients come to us with a general sense of direction rather than a fully developed plan.

The early stages of the design process are intended to explore those ideas, helping shape them into something clearer and more practical. This gives you confidence in the direction before any landscaping work begins.
