Child Friendly Sensory Gardens

Sensory gardens are designed to stimulate your senses, they create a therapeutic and are learning environments through; touch, smell, taste, sound and sight. These types of gardens are ideal for all ages and have endless possibilities for design and function. Delve into our latest case study where we designed some child friendly sensory gardens.

This sensory garden is filled with texture, colour, sound and various focal points to enrich curiosity and exploration within young adults and children.

Design

When planning the look of this garden, possible disabilities, loss of senses and general usability were the focal point of design. Including low observatory points, distinctive areas, and wheelchair accessibility making this garden inclusive of all needs.

Starting with the main focal points of the garden, from the multi-textural cylindrical structures, star shaped barefoot box and water feature. These features have been chosen to be used in different ways to enhance the sense of touch.

For example, hitting the cylindrical structures with objects can produce different sounds. The Star shaped box is perfect for feeling the textures either by hand or foot, and the water feature creates a splash zone with therapeutic running water sounds.

Designated areas for the mirrored trellis, sheltered seating area and cabbage patch gardening zone, allow choice of activity with no interruptions, ensuring the freedom to move from one area to the next easily.

Lighting enhances visibility in low light and increases safety when moving around the garden, especially during the winter months. Lighting can also be used as a stimulating and decorative interest. Fairy lights within the trees and spotlights can create a calm and a ‘safe space’ to alleviate nervousness.
