It’s a cheap and natural process which creates nutritious food for your garden. You will not only be creating a free and healthy fertiliser for your plants but you will be helping to save the planet!
When your rubbish gets to the landfill site, the air can’t get to the organic matter to break the waste down so it creates methane, a greenhouse gas which damages the earth’s atmosphere.
Once your compost bin is on the go, you can use it for many different areas in your garden:
Flowerbeds – Dig a 10cm layer of your new compost into your flowerbeds before planting up with a mixture of shrubs, perennials, and herbaceous plants. If your beds are already planted up, just lay a thin layer around the plants to add nutrients.
Herbs and Veg – If you are growing herbs such as parsley and mint, use a bit of your compost around the base of the plants in order to help them to grow better and improve the quality of the produce. The vegetables in your garden will also benefit from the added nutrients from your compost heap – this will improve the nutritional value and taste of vegs such as potatoes and carrots.
Lawns – The smaller compost particles can be mixed with an even amount of sharp sand. Dress the lawn with a 2.5cm layer of this in order to make your lawn look very luxuriant and green.
Make sure you watch out for diseased or pest-ridden waste. Don’t add it to your compost heap, it will just feed and encourage pests.
