Liquidambar Cultivation

Liquidambars (sweet gum) are among the more trouble-free trees to grow. They are rarely affected by pests and diseases, although they are fairly vulnerable to honey fungus.

Poor Autumn Colour

The most common problem reported is that individual liquidambars are not producing a good display of autumn colour. Although the reason is somewhat a mystery, Factors included can be; climate, soil type, and recent weather. Another problem could be nearby streetlights. They can sometimes discourage the tree from dropping its leaves. A further observation has been that liquidambar in the warmer parts of the UK and on alkaline soils do not produce good autumn colour and hold their leaves for longer.
