July Gardening

What to Plant and do in Your Garden in July

As summer unravels and that we are now in July, many things can be done to keep your garden in shape. Therefore, we’ve selected a few things to do and flowers and vegetables to plant in your garden this month:

Water

Firstly, most plants do not thrive in heat and sometimes rain is not enough. Therefore, it is important to water your plants according to their needs. Most plants are usually well when watered three times a week. However, make sure to keep a close look out for your plants to notice any signs of drought.

Look after your perennials

Perennials are plants that live for three or more growing seasons, therefore usually live for three years or more. Some popular perennial flowers are Lavender, Roses, Yarrows, Iris and Primroses. So, feed your perennial flowers, with the help of a fertilizer, and deadhead them. Deadheading will make the plant grow back nicer. It also prevents the plant from using too much energy trying to create a new seed.

Plant

It’s a great time to start planting or sowing seeds. Food-wise, you can plant chard, spinach, turnips, chicory or fennel. If you want to plant flowers, Forget-Me-Nots, Pansies, or Sweet Williams are good choices (but there are other ones of course!).

Help the wildlife

One way of doing this is to place bird baths around your garden. In moments of heat, birds and insects will happily make use of them. Don’t forget to fill them up regularly! Growing any type of flowers is also a way of generating pollen for the insect pollinators.
