Common Garden Pests

Our gardens are full of all sorts of creatures ranging from larger animals through to insects. As cute as some may be, certain creatures can cause more damage to our gardens than good. This article goes into detail about the most common garden pests and ways to control them.

White Cabbage Caterpillar

These pests, as the name suggests, tend to be found near/on cabbages and leaves in your garden. White cabbage caterpillars love to nibble on your brassica plants such as cauliflowers, brussel sprouts and of course; cabbage.

To stop them eating your vegetables set up a net over your patch to stop the cabbage butterflies leaving eggs on the plant leaves. Alternatively, you can use a chemical spray such as a nematode spray.

Moles

Common mole attributes are a pointed snout, small eyes, and about 5-6 inches in size. Whilst these animals will not eat your garden plants, they may destroy your flowerbeds and lawns due to the amount of digging they do.

There are many ways you can get rid of moles; anti-mole nets installed under your turf or planting deterrent flowers such as marigolds. If these options do not work, then you can choose a pest control company to get rid of them.

Slugs and Snails

Common Garden Pests

Considered one of the most hated pests in the gardening world slugs and snails, similar to the caterpillar, will take pleasure in eating your vegetables if you don’t control them. Ways to do this include netting vegetation, making beer traps, or creating a prickly barrier.

Rabbits

Don’t be deceived by how cute they are! Rabbits can cause as much damage as all the above COMBINED. These animals enjoy eating your plants as well as digging holes in your garden. Trying to keep these pests at bay is relatively easy by installing wire fences around certain areas of your property.

Pigeons

Everywhere you go you will notice pigeons and how often they are eating. This does not stop in your garden. These birds like to consume cabbages and broccoli but there is a simple solution to stop this. Installing nets over your vegetable patches, especially in the summer months when pigeons are the most active, helps to keep your produce safe.
