Gardening Jobs for April

April is warm and bright and I hope you are enjoying it as much as we are here. Being in the garden, mowing the lawns and carrying out a little pruning and weeding, there is no better way to spend a warm sunny afternoon. We are flying through spring and before we know it, we will be in the summer season. There is still plenty of jobs to do this month before we get there though. Here are our gardening jobs for April

April jobs to do:
• With these April showers, ensure you are keeping on top of your weeding; they will only be an issue all summer otherwise.
• If the temperature is high enough, then seeds can be planted outside. If you have children helping you to plant then, onion sets are a good idea. Part-grown onions being planted give you a head start.
• Towards the end of April, it would be a good time to give a spring feed to the lawn – that is if all the frost has gone.

Pruning:
When it comes to early-spring-flowering trees and shrubs, they should be immediately pruned after Plants such as forsythia, redbud, star magnolia, viburnum, cherry and Bridalwreath Spirea should be pruned.

Weeding:
It is so much nicer to see a lovely weed free border, instead filled with shrubs and flowers – making it feel like spring is blossoming around you. Crabgrass, chickweed and ground ivy are just some of the weeds you may find popping up in your borders. There are two types of weeds; Annual weeds and Perennial weeds. Perennial weeds are those that come back year after year and annual weeds are best controlled by stopping them from sprouting. This can be easily done by regular hoeing of the soil. The perennial weeds need a bit more effort and usually involve digging them out or using a systemic weed-killer if you have to.
