Sensory Garden

Sensory gardens are designed to stimulate your senses, they create a therapeutic and learning environment through, touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight. These types of gardens are ideal for all ages and have endless possibilities for design and function. Carry-on reading to find out how you can create a sensory garden at home.

Sight

To stimulate the sense of sight, there are many things you can do. For example, using plants that change colours through the seasons, such as trees. Some trees will blossom during the summer months, whilst having brilliant green leaves before changing to burgundy/red in the autumn. Choosing wall shrubs and climbers such as ‘Solanum crispum’ and ‘Parthenocissus’ is also an effective option in a sensory garden. Sensory Garden

Sound

Picking plants that attract wildlife can lead to increasing the level of sound that your garden produces. For example, the buzzing of a bee or the chirping of birds will stimulate the hearing. Another thing that enhances sound would be a water feature- there’s nothing more satisfying than listening to the trickling of water.

Smell

Including flowers such as Lavender, Wisteria, Sweet Peas and Honeysuckle will add wonderful aromas to your garden as they are highly scented plants. Also, adding a herb allotment not only will help you in the kitchen but will also add fragrance to your garden!

Touch

Sensory Garden

For this sense, you will want to add different textures to the garden. You could do this by including various plants such as moss or Pennisetum’s. Another way to incorporate different textures would be to choose a variety of types of ground cover such as pebbles, tiling or even grass.

Taste

Including edible berries and vegetables are a tasty way to create a sensory garden. There are many different delicious plants to choose from, but our recommendations are strawberries, chives, and nasturtiums!
