Pests and Diseases that can Affect your Garden
Pests:
Lily Beetles: These pests attack lilies. They are bright red in colour and are approximately 8mm long. Their orange-brown excrement coated larvae devour both foliage and flowers. Lily beetles and their larvae can be removed from your plants by hand.
Gladioulus Thrips: These are insects that attack Gladioli and are around 2mm long with narrow bodies. They are usually black or pale yellow and hide in flower buds or under leaf bases. Their presence is indicated by mottled, white or discoloured foliage and white flecks on petals. These pests can be controlled by spraying your plants with a systemic herbicide. We recommend thiacloprid or acetamiprid.
Diseases:
Viruses: Viruses affect cannas, dahlias and gladioli, causing reduced vigour, chlorosis, necrosis and malformations. To get rid of viruses you should destroy and affected plants and wash your hands and tools to limit the chance of the virus spreading.
Lily disease: This disease is a fungal leaf blight. Elliptical, water-soaked leaf spots may spread to stems and flowers. Any spotted leaves you find should be cut off to stop the disease from spreading. To prevent lily disease plant on a well-drained site, this helps with ventilation.
Grey mould: This is fairly common in wet seasons. Grey fuzzy fungal growth appears on stems and flowers. To prevent grey mould avoid overcrowding plants and remove diseased plants and plant the debris.
Smuts: These can cause problems for dahilias. Leaf spots with yellow margins appear. Dispose of any diseased foliage and remove leaves before storing tubers.
