Propagating

What is Propagating?

Propagating is where a specimen of a plant is bred via the natural processes from the parent plant. It is often used by keen gardeners as a cost effective way to planting up their garden. Propagating is a great way to obtain new plants as it is a rewarding and fascinating process.

Our Propagating Recommendations:

Hydrangea

1. Hydrangea

An elegant perennial plant that is easy to cultivate and can tolerate most types of soil. With over 70 species producing beautiful blooms in a variety of colours ranging from bright blues to musky pinks. When propagating Hydrangeas we recommend that in late-spring to midsummer you take softwood cuttings. Whereas in midsummer through to Autumn take semi-ripe cuttings. And finally take hardwood cuttings in the winter.

Lavender2. Lavender

Lavender is widely cultivated for its essential oils, however it is also a popular garden plant, particularly for cottage gardens. When propagating we recommend taking softwood or semi-ripe cuttings from young plants in early to mid summer.

Dahlia

3. Dahlia

Part of the Aster family, Dahlias are known for their giant pinwheel flowers that bloom in a variety of colours from July into Autumn. When propagating we recommend either dividing into clumps of tubers or taking softwood cuttings, both should be done in spring.
