Planting Bulbs, Corms, Tubers and Rhizomes

Bulbs are a lovely addition to any garden and they are one of the easiest garden plants to grow! When spring flowering bulbs appear, it brings much-needed colour and interest to our gardens following the cold dull winter.

When it comes to growing bulbs all you need is well-drained soil and some sunshine. Whereas an Iris, which is a rhizome not a bulb, likes slightly more damp conditions. However, ensure the soil is not too wet otherwise the rhizome is likely to rot. Depending on what you are planting will require different conditions to get the very best from them. The ideal time to plant spring flowering bulbs, like tulips and daffodils is during September or October. By planting them at this time it allows the soil temperature to lower following the heat of the summer. Summer flowering tubers, like Dahlias, are ideally planted during spring when the risk of frost has passed.

As well as the typical spring flowering bulbs, there are summer flowering corms such as Crocosmia ‘Lucifer’ which stand 1.15m (3.5ft) tall and look very striking. There are also autumn flowering bulb like corms that look amazing such as Colchicums, which flower before any leaves appear.
