Planting of Sensory Gardens
Sensory gardens are those that have a greater effect on the senses, through the use of specific trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and bulbs. Through careful choice of colours, smells and textures, the garden can provide a wonderful learning experience, and are normally tailored to the needs of the individual that the garden is being constructed for.
Thought must be given to multiple things such as the height of the proposed user of the garden. For example, if it is for young children we would want to keep the usable and observable height much lower. Whereas, if the sensory garden was for a wheelchair user then access to the different parts of the garden would be taken into account when designing the garden.
Normally sensory gardens that we design and create are aimed towards all the senses. However, if the client has no use of a certain sense, such as sight, we would then ensure that the other senses were captivated by what we would include such as; sand to walk through and scent from plants such as Roses and Mint. A particular favourite plant of ours is Pennyroyal which has lovely little flowers. Lavender, Iris and Sarcococca as well, to name a few. We could then use plants such as Betula jacquemontii, which has paper white bark that you can gently pull it off with out damaging the tree, or the Paperbark Maple, Acer griseum. We can also use things like wind chimes and running water to appeal to the sense of hearing. The obvious idea is to make it an interesting as well as a calming environment. What we aim to achieve is to create a bespoke solution depending on what is required. This brief can be provided by the client or we can meet with you either face to face or virtually to create a brief and design that will tick all the boxes.
