Snow Preparation
We do need to keep an eye on the temperature this month. If you don’t have frost protection in your garden and greenhouse then one extremely cold night could be fatal to the plants inside. It’s important that you care for your garden during this cold time and make sure that you are careful when the snow comes. Snow preparation is ever so important!
A blanket of snow on the ground can be great for your garden as it insulates the plants underneath and keeps them warm in the frosty weather. However, it’s really important that you don’t walk on your grass when it is covered in snow as this may damage the turf underneath, compressing the snow and causing marks and encouraging fungal diseases.
It is also important to shake branches free from snow as the snow can weigh your branches down and cause them to break and bend. To avoid this problem it may be a good idea to tie up your Conifers with string to stop them from being pulled out of shape – if the branches are disfigured over time, they will not spring back to normal in the future.
Also, if you are a keen veg grower and have a greenhouse which gets covered in snow, it’s a good idea to brush all of the snow off which could be stopping light from coming through therefore depriving your plants.
With all of this in mind this month – I’m sure we will see you at the other end with your garden looking fantastic and fit and healthy, raring to go in the spring!
