Tastes of Autumn
Are you are passionate about cooking and love to grow your own produce? At Blue Iris Landscapes we offer tips and advice on all aspects of garden care and planting. All recommendations below can be grown in your UK garden and are perfect to use in your cooking to bring you the tastes of Autumn.
Apples:
With over 2,000 varieties grown in the UK, Apples are a nations favourite with a tart-sweet taste making them perfect for pies, crumbles and cider.
Pumpkins:
Pumpkins have become a popular fall flavour at your local coffee shop however they are also ideal for soups, roasting and baking. When planting pumpkins ensure they are planted in well-drained soil, this will help them to thrive.
Mushrooms:
Rich and earthy in flavour mushrooms are a versatile addition to most meals including breakfast, risottos, pasta and even sauces. There are around 4,000 species of wild mushroom that grow in the UK, however only 100-150 of these are considered edible.
Parsnips:
Parsnips are root vegetable that are closely related to the carrot. However they are higher in natural sugars and have a sweet and earthy taste that enriches after the first frost. They are perfect for mashes, stews and roasts. We recommend roasting them with locally sourced honey.
Leeks:
Leeks are a national symbol of Wales, these mild, sweet and onion-like beauties are great in soups, quiche and casseroles. They are ready for harvest in autumn and winter when other fresh crops may be in short supply. However they don’t have to be harvested straight away, leeks can be left standing through the colder months and then lifted whenever you want them.
Sage:
Sage is a staple herb that is used in small amounts to adds depth to roasts, stuffing and savoury sauces. It has been used in British medicine since the middle ages as it contains antioxidants, which may help promote oral health and brain function. It may also help to lower cholesterol and blood sugar.
