When should you cut your hedge?

Hedge PruningThe best time of year to cut a hedge can vary depending on the type of hedge and its age. Here are a few suggestions on when would be best for you to get your hedge cut:

If your hedge is less than three years old, formative pruning should take place in late winter or early spring. This will encourage further growth and will result in the hedge keeping its shape as it continues to grow.

Hedge CuttingFor most hedges, one ‘maintenance’ trim a year is required. This should be carried out in late summer or early autumn (once any birds have finished nesting). If your hedge requires two maintenance trims, these should be completed mid-way through the season (April-May) as well as at the end of the season. Extra care will need to be taken to check there are no nesting birds present.

Conifer hedges are the one exception to the above – we would recommend that these are not trimmed after August (i.e., when the weather turns cold and damp). Pruning too late in the season can lead to brown patches in the hedge the following year.
