Winter Garden Protection

Many of us woke up this morning to a sheet of snow covering our gardens and we are still due for some more. We just wanted to make sure that all of your winter garden protection has been taken care of so that you don’t need to worry over this cold season!

Sudden frosts and change in weather conditions may come as a surprise to us over the next few weeks. We have been used to quite a warm winter this year compared to most and we don’t want you to fall victim to plant damaged by a sudden change in the weather!

Here are a few tasks to make sure are done:

• Prune and shape the shrubs and trees – this is an ideal time for most plants as they are dormant around this time and you can see and deal with any diseased branches. This will mean that it will be easier to prevent the spread of the disease.
• Beware: Make sure that you clean all of your utensils after you have cut a diseased branch – this will help to prevent any spread of the disease from one plant to the other.
• The harsh weather can uproot your plants, often newly planted ones. Simply re-firming the plant into the ground will help to avoid any more damage to the plant and will hopefully give them the strength to last through the winter period.
• Move tender plants inside during this season or if not possible, insulate your plants by wrapping them up with horticultural fleece and bubble wrap.
• Tie up your Conifers – the snow will gather on top of them and encourage the branches to splay out. It may also be a good idea to shake off the snow as soon as possible to ensure that minimal amount of damage is done.
