Blue Iris Landscapes – October Garden Checklist:
We know it may be difficult to know what to do in your garden as the season draws to an end. However, fear not, there are still plenty of jobs to be done to continue with your hobby. Now is the perfect time to get out in the garden and caught up on all outdoor chores before the winter arrives. So, let’s take a look at our October Garden checklist…
-
Trim Your Hedges
Hedge cutting is an important aspect of garden maintenance, as hedges often surround our properties and give the first impression of our home to guests and passers-by. However, not only will trimming your hedges be easy on the eye, but it will actually benefit the species health as removing dying branches allows your hedges to flower and fruits to blossom.
-
Pot Up Your Herbs
Begin to pot up your herbs such as thyme, oregano and mint and allow them to grow over the upcoming winter season in your kitchen windowsill. These herbs will then be able to be planted in your planter of choice (check out our favourite planters here)!
-
General Tidy Ups
Make sure to rake up any fallen leaves to keep your garden neat and tidy. By doing this, you will be eliminating damaging the dead grass tissue above the soil. Also, make sure to wash and tidy your greenhouse to reduce the chance of unwanted pests and diseases.
-
Root Cuttings and Perennial Trimming
By cutting back old foliage and flower stems from your perennials, it encourages them to produce another flush of flowers in the next growing season. Alongside this, root cuttings are used to propagate plants that can produce new shoots from their roots. This means that many new plants can be generated from one parent species alone.
-
Get A Soil Test
If you haven’t previously undertaken a soil test in the past three years, then now it the chance for it. Having a soil test allows you to see the nutrients in your soil and therefore understand which plants will flourish in your garden. By analysing your soil now, it also gives you the opportunity for you to amend and fertilize your soil; saving you time next spring (get yours here).
