As Summer arrives, you are more likely to be spending a great deal of time outside in the garden with your pets. This makes it all the more important to ensure that you pet-proof your garden, for your furry friends.

Check out our top tips for making your garden pet-friendly below.

Get rid of toxic plants

Pet-proof gardens

There may be a variety of flowers and plants in your garden that could be poisonous to certain pets like cats and dogs. Begonias, Chrysanthemums, Daffodils and Lilies, to name a few, are considered some of the most toxic plants for your animals. Although they are all beautiful spring and summer plants, digesting these could result in digestive problems, vomiting and may be fatal to your pets in some cases. Instead, you could opt for Daisies, Roses or Sunflowers which all are pet friendly.

Use raised beds

Many cats or dogs like to play and dig in exposed dirt and soil in the garden. By installing raised beds, it allows you to protect your plants from being dug out of the ground as well as keeping your garden clean and tidy.

Make sure you have secure fencing

If you allow your dog to roam around your garden freely, make sure your fencing has no holes or small areas that would allow your pet to squeeze through and wander off. Whilst this may sound obvious, pets can be crafty and dig around or under barriers to escape! Fences are also a great way to border off and create a “no pet zone” in your garden. This may be particularly useful if you have a pond, pool or an allotment space.
