Like any other gardening, starting to grow your own herbs may require some hard work to begin with but it will be worth it! By following our simple steps, you will be trimming mint leaves and adding flavour to your dishes in no time.

Choose The Right Herb Planter

Whether you are starting small or large, choosing the right sized pots and planters will contribute to the overall size of your plants. The material of the planters should be durable, allowing for different weather types as well as being a good weight so the planter does not fall over in the wind.

Split Your Herbs Into Hard and Soft Categories

Most herbs are usually split into two different categories, hard and soft! Hard herbs are those that can survive with the harsh conditions of the winter season as well as the summer months. Some examples of these herbs would be thyme, rosemary, and sage. Most hard herbs have wood-like stems and are added throughout the cooking process to add flavour.

Soft herbs, however, need a little more tender loving care as they are delicate plants. Only added to end of cooking to bring a dish together, the most common soft herbs are basil, chives, and coriander.

General Upkeep

Make sure to keep up with the maintenance of your herb garden in order to keep your plants alive. For example, ensure to keep your pots watered every day, especially in the summer months where the temperatures rise. Another tip would be to add drainage holes to your pots to allow excess water to escape to protect the herbs from flooding and root rot. Finally, keep on top of the trimming of your herbs before they have chance to flower (as this affects the quality of the leaves and taste).
