Easy to maintain flowering plants

When we think of an English country garden, we normally imagine a garden that is bursting with colour. Sadly, many of us do not have the time to ensure that what we plant grows and thrives. Here are three easy to maintain flowering plants, which will bring colour to your garden this summer!

Zinnias

As Zinnias grow quickly and reliably, they are one of the easiest flowers to grow. They can be planted any time from the first frost until the end of June – this will ensure the best growth. Zinnias should be planted in an area of full sun (having at least six hours a day) and the foliage should be kept dry as much as possible to avoid any bacteria, fungi, or mildew.

Sweet Peas

Their pastel shades have proved most popular historically and will be the image that may appear in your head when you think of the flower. Sweet peas will grow happily in any fertile soil that drains easily; however, they need as much sun as possible. Depending on the height they grow to, sweet peas may require a trellis or stake to provide their stems with support.

Lavender

Easy to maintain flowers- lavenderDespite originating in the Mediterranean, lavender still grows well in the UK’s slightly cooler and damper climate. The attractive bright purple flowers, along with the scent, will attract bees and other insects to your garden. Lavender, if looked after well, will last for several years. It should be planted in a sheltered location, to offer it as much protection as possible throughout the winter. Lavender is very forgiving, but if your soil is overly acidic, it will not thrive. Once established, lavender is very low maintenance, and will require minimal watering and a once-a-year prune (reducing it by half in early spring to promote new growth).

Hopefully, these tips will help you create a fragrant, colourful, and enjoyable space for you this summer. Please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss any planting work you require, or our maintenance packages that will keep your garden in its best condition all year round.
